Før jeg blev psykolog, havde jeg en ret så overdrevet tiltro til, hvad psykologer kan. Jeg troede ikke, at de læse tanker, men jeg troede vist, at de havde en nøgle til menneskesindet, der gjorde dem i stand til at gennemskue andre og regne livet ud.
Derfor følte jeg mig lidt som en bedrager, da jeg som færdiguddannet blev sat i gang med at behandle klienter. For jeg følte mig på ingen måde i stand til at regne ret meget ud. Det bedste, jeg kunne tilbyde, var at hjælpe dem med at forstå sig selv. Det er det sådan set stadigvæk.
På psykologistudiet læste vi en masse teorier om mennesker. Vi lærte om ego, og superego, om socialkonstruktivisme, om tilknytning, om at putte en rotte i en kasse og se, hvad den gør. Og vi lærte diagnosekriterierne for psykiske lidelser. Abnormal psykologi, hed det. Vi lærte at få det til at lyde, som om vi havde styr på det, der sker i og mellem mennesker.
Men vi har slet ikke har styr på det. Vi har nogle ideer, men mange af dem har vi arvet fra mennesker, der bare sad og tænkte teorier. De teorier skabte ord, som vi har arrangeret vores forståelse omkring. Ord som depression, underbevidsthed, skizofreni. Vi begyndte at bruge ordene, før vi vidste, hvad vi skulle putte i dem. Det, vi kalder depression, er nok en hel bunke forskellige ting, der har det tilfælles, at de fører til nedtrykthed (og selv det er ikke altid tilfældet). Det svarer til, at lægerne havde en diagnose, der hed feber. Ikke forkert, men heller ikke vildt hjælpsomt.
Så når jeg sidder over for en klient, som desperat gerne vil vide, hvorfor hun har så svært ved tingene, kan jeg godt tage teorierne frem af skuffen og svare noget, der lyder ekspertagtigt. Men det kunne være forkert. Skal jeg sige det? Skal jeg forklare alle forbeholdene og de mange uvisheder? Skal jeg vise, at psykologien og psykiatrien stadig famler (og fumler)? Det er det, jeg gør i dag. Men måske ville det være bedre at spille ekspertrollen og gemme uvisheden væk. Hvad ville være bedst? Det er endnu en af de ting, jeg ikke ved.
